UFO Tales

Established by expatriate New Englander Boyd and counter-culture catalyst John “Hoppy” Hopkins, in The Blarney Club, an Irish ballroom at 31 Tottenham Court Road, UFO (the name stood for Unlimited Freak Out, had nothing to do with flying saucers and was always pronounced you-foe) first opened its doors just before Christmas 1966.
For a ten-bob entry fee, you could commune with fellow freaks from 10 in the evening until 8 the following morning watching Marx Brothers movies, being dazzled by light-shows, playing “spot the fuzz” and scoring some of the best LSD this side of San Francisco.
Oh, and there was music, lots of music and everybody featured below provided it at one time or another.
Of course things couldn’t last. It didn’t take long for The News Of The World to start sniffing around. On the first Sunday of July the front page carried a picture a topless girl who the paper claimed to be 15 under the headline “Hippie Vice Den!”. It was an inexorable descent from there on……
