This week we have some more Jazz an Blues coming your way,
down at the The Flamingo Club- an ‘all-nighter’Jazz nightclub in
Soho, London, between 1952 and 1969. Located at 33–37
Wardour Street from 1957 onwards & played an integral role in
the development of British Rhythm and Blues and Modern Jazz.
(AN APPOINTMENT WITH MOD!)
“I dropped in to the flamingo, it was still pretty early, Brownie and the Prince were huddled ‘round a small table, in a most important meet. Things were buzzin’ with the evenings preps. Little Davey J was playing some hip shakin’ Blues- Lightnin’ Hopkins, a Josh White LP that he’d just picked up & a couple a Jimmy Reed tunes. The Doc was looking sharp as per, mohair suit & polka dots from Cosmo, his tailor in the wild west. The Messengers were just coolin’ , Lady Ella was in town, and Manny talking gibberish about the end of the world. I’m just trying make it through till the end of the night. Later they’d be some of the swingin’est Jazz that had made its way to this side. It would be hot, but it would be cool.”
